The 5th annual Desert Daze festival took over The Institute of Mental Physics of Joshua Tree this past weekend, and featured a wide range of up-and-coming artists as well as popular and well-established indie acts. Most of the bands at the festival were either a Psychedelic throw back to the 1970s or experimental artists making electronic music.

Day 1 started with with a couple of technical problems including audio feedback, audio problems and even Deakin from Animal Collective having a fit on stage due to the overwhelming sound issues.

All of these problems seemed to fade away as the festival continued. Some of the highlights were the psychedelic Grateful Dead-influenced band Dios, Halloween glam band ‘The Death Valley Girls, and the fun and energetic psych band from Australia King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

Also featured at the festival was the ’60s garage rock band The Sonics, the funky and cool Toro y Moi, and the mysterious Deerhunter.

Mauricio Alvarado: I've been a concert photographer for the past 5 years. My work has been featured on various music magazines and websites. Some of the bands I've photographed are Yes, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Santana, and many more. I'm obsessed with 70's Progressive Rock music. I enjoy photographing bands that I grew up listening to. I'm also a big vinyl record collector since I was in High School. I always enjoy taking my albums to shows and getting them signed by the bands.
