Sad13 also known as Sadie Dupuis from the band Speedy Ortiz is getting ready to release her debut solo album, Slugger, next month. The grunge pop star has dazzled us with the singles “Get A Yes” and “<2.” Today she is releasing the third single off Slugger entitled “Devil In U.” By the end of the song the lyrics embed a simple sing-a-long with a deep message.
Sad13 couldn’t have described the message of the song any better.
It’s about constraining your life to avoid conflict in the face of emotional abuse. You cut yourself off from your support systems and passions to prevent and assuage your partner’s irrational reactions; you force yourself to fit another person’s definition of “angelic” so as not to provoke their “devilish” side. But no devil is worth your care if they don’t love and support you for who you are. And if the “Devil In U” causes you to hurt someone you supposedly love, maybe you’re just the devil, period.
This is just another chapter from the album Slugger that was self produced, recorded, and written by Sadie Dupuis. Gabe Wax mixed the album and Slugger was mastered by Emily Lazar. She is bringing music that has a deeper meaning than just pop songs from the 90’s. Sad13 sings about real life issues while keeping that grunge pop style.
