(wôk rat): A fresh breath of societal angst wrapped in sonic urgency.
Wakrat was coming to an end of their tour and became warped into the societal angst between an American and two Frenchmen, as Commerford describes it. In an Instagram post attached to the article, there is clear footage of the scuffle that went down last Sunday.
Commerford is telling the audience, “If you don’t like us..” then began to flip off the crowd. You see in the video he gently removes the strap of his bass around his neck and sets the instrument down. Instantaneously, punk rocker goes full on Olympics. Putting both his hands together above his head and diving into the drummer (and drum kit), Mathias. In the video, you are able to see Mathias has the mindset of “The show must go on” and continues to play the drum. After a few attempts, Commerford is able to officially take down Mathias off the drum set and the fight begins.
Meanwhile, Laurent Grangeon the other band member, plays the guitar in a truly rocker fashion. All the while, the altercation between Commerford and Mathias is taking place, Grangeon casually walks over to the still standing drum kit and uses his hand to bang on the set a couple times.
What was that about? After the show, Commerford did an interview with Loudwire and explained, “He’s very passionate about music and while we’re playing music and the lyrics, we’re also very rehearsed. There is some music that has some odd timing and you just have to rehearse that and we sort of get into moments either after shows or during where it’s like, ‘Hey dude, you screwed up that part and the train came off the tracks.’ During that last show, there was a difference of opinion on who f-ked up. And he’s an intense dude and so am I (laughs), so there was eye contact made where he was like, ‘Dude what are you doing?’ and I’m like, ‘Dude, what are you doing?’ And so afterward, I just went after him and just leaped over his drums to sort of get to him and ended up hitting his back. I don’t know how I got that many cuts on my face, but that’s the way it goes when you mix an American and two French people together. Ultimately, that s-t’s gonna happen.” Clearly laughing at the situation, boys will be boys type brothel.
