After serving the Los Angeles area for the past 15 years, Amoeba Music may soon be on the prowl for a new home. It was reported that Amoeba’s music building has been sold to developers who are trying to make way for a 20 story luxury glass tower with a rooftop pool.
The property located famously at 6400 Sunset Boulevard was sold last October for around $34 million, thus it is currently owned by a holding company associated with GPI Companies. Some may know of these developers for their work with Los Angeles city’s Promenade at Howard Hughes Center and the Granada Hills Town Center.
Although the building was sold, a statement from reps at Amoeba insure that they plan to stay at their current residence for the rest of their lease until the contract ends which is not for another several years. Amoeba continues to reassure that there are talks between Amoeba and the building owner to potentially have Amoeba stay longer after the lease ends.
Supporting music enthusiasts and vinyl collectors, Amoeba has provided very hard to find items without using online outlets. The independent record store has storefronts remaining in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Hollywood, California. Amoeba is known for its grand nature housing up to 100,000 CDs, vinyl records, and audio cassettes both new and used. It will be interesting to see how developers and Amoeba Music can work together to keep such a strong part of music alive.
