Animals As Leaders, Intervals, Plini @ Bottom Lounge 11/25

“We’re all essentially animals.”

The idea behind the name. If you think about it, the name is a reference to a book entitled Ishmael.  For centuries, many have considered humans to be THE supreme beings (even though we all know cats know something we don’t). But to focus on the music, Tosin Abasi’s guitar work is completely unique, especially within metal music. He has speed and accuracy, but also an undeniably dreamy yet down-and-dirty style. The synthesizer effects commonly used within their music builds a new, unexplored part of prog metal.

Each song’s structure is unique and unlike the formulaic two-minute hits that fill the airwaves. There are so many different styles and levels being explored that it becomes reminiscent of animals interacting and the various issues they face. Everything comes full circle. Not to mention, if you watch any of their music videos, you know this band has a sense of humor. Just watch the video for “Physical Education” and you’ll know what I mean. Not only are their videos funny, but they can also be extremely visually pleasing, with lights and shapes that interact with the sounds the band has created.

It might be surprising to find out that the reason Animals As Leaders even exists today is because Prosthetic Records wanted Abasi to make a solo album full of his unique guitar work. He initially turned the offer down, but reconsidered and that is how the band was formed. This is going to be a show unlike any others, especially with their reputation for being great live performers.
