Isaiah Rashad caught his big break in 2013 when he toured along-side Juicy J and Joey Bada$$ and ultimately signed with major recording label Top Dawg Entertainment that September. It wasn’t until last Thursday that Rashad finally released his debut album, and it was well worth the wait. The album The Sun’s Tirade features thirteen songs, including several collaborations with popular artists and label mates Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Jay Rock.
Kendrick appears on “Wat’s Wrong,” a complex hip hip track containing a psychedelic soul sound, that opens with a smooth beat and a shrill vocal. At first, the mix seems contradictory but they create a unique melody that keeps you intrigued in the first few seconds. Rashad begins with a seemingly breathless flow and immediately I was hooked. His verse is followed by Kendrick, adding his distinctive sound to the five and a half minute track. It ends with a recording of an anecdotal story about Rashad and his father, which adds a personal touch to the song where audiences can get a glimpse of the real Isaiah Rashad. Recently, Kendrick Lamar brought out Rashad during his set at FYF fest in Los Angeles and the duo performed another song from The Sun’s Tirade, “Free Lunch.” As Rashad is a new artist, he already is no newbie to festivals. He was also a featured artist at the iTunes Festival 2014 in Austin, Texas.
