The Obama administration has announced it will host a one-day SXSW-inspired music festival on the White House Lawn, NPR reports. The festival, called South by South Lawn, is set to take place on October 3. It will consist of interactive, film, and music portions, just like SXSW.
“[South by South Lawn will] bring together creators, innovators, and organizers who work day in and day out to improve the lives of their fellow Americans and people around the world,” the White House said.
The lineup for South-by-South Lawn has not yet been announced. Festival organizers will accept online nominations for performers through September 10 at 5 p.m. Eastern.
“Musical performances will include well-known and emerging artists who are using their music to inspire audiences,” according to the White House website.
The White House is holding the event in conjunction with SXSW, C3 Presents, American Film Institute (AFI), and the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities (PCAH).
In March, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at SXSW. The First Lady’s keynote address featured Missy Elliott, Diane Warren, and Sophia Bush, and was moderated by Queen Latifah.
UDPATE 9/27: Yesterday the SXSL lineup was announced, featuring The Lumineers, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and DJ Beverly Bond from the world of music.
The event will feature a conversation between President Barack Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio and climate scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, followed by the domestic premiere of the film Before the Flood.
Also included in the festival is an interactive portion which will feature panel discussions including LA, A Case Study in Innovation, Feeding the Future and How We Make Change, among others.
