South-African rave-rap group Die Antwoord has released their official video for “Banana Brain”, the first single of the group’s fourth LP Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid, and boy does it leave an impression.
This new music video, which was directed by Ninja and Terence Neale, features Die Antwoord going through a night that continues to get more surreal as it goes on. It opens up without any music and a shot of a young woman (Yolandi Visser) making tea (drugged tea that is!) for her religious parents, causing them to pass out and frees her to set out on her night adventures.
She leaves the house and joins her bad-boy friend (Ninja), driving around like maniacs, shooting guns at a random light post, while Visser is singing “Stay with me tonight/ ‘Cause I’m having the best time of my life”.
The night only gets crazier from there, the two enter a party filled with drugs, alcohol and make-out sessions with other girls. Visser’s character winds up taking what seems like LSD, and that’s where the video starts to really get intense, we see the woman run into a bathroom and loose her mind staring at a mirror, cutting her hair and freaking out.
After her bad-boy gives her an improved haircut, she is able to return to the party where the party goes on until the morning, and after getting dropped off at her house, the music video ends.
Die Antwoord is constantly coming out with mind-blowing, thought provoking videos, and this one is no different.
The group sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss this newest project, “Recently, while we was finishing up this album, another layer exploded out of our dark wild juicy core like a giant supernatural mega aura, and suddenly our album was so epic and sometimes vulnerable and sometimes sweet and romantic and so brave and full of mystery and win,” the duo said. “Like when you going through hell, and the mission feels impossible, but you not allowed to fail, and all you can do is keep your chin up and keep going, then when you least expect it you emerge from this dark never-ending hole, and … you made it!”
The band is planning on kicking off their American tour Sept 21st in SF, ending in NOLA on Oct 29th, and with this new set of songs they can choose from, it is looking like their show is a must-see experience.
