“Why are you so FAR from saving me”
This Psalms quote Bon Iver opens up the video to his latest release “33, ‘God'”. Though Justin Vernon has turned to biblical message, the new song explores themes of skepticism in a higher being and perhaps his separation from religion.
The song continues Bon Iver’s numerology theme. The title number 33 is the agreed upon age of Jesus’s passing. The track is ends at 3:33 and was released 33 days prior to the album release. Sonically, the track is far more similar to Bon Iver’s work with Kanye West than anything on For Emma, Long Ago.
The video is just as enigmatic and distortion-heavy. Following the Psalms quote, the word “God” displayed over an image of an animated rainbow appear between verses while a choppy backdrop of a dark, thundering landscape loops. Mysterious symbols pop in and out of the lyrics video. The track sample’s Jim Brown’s 1970 country crossover hit “Morning.”
Throughout the month, Bon Iver has been releasing singles from his upcoming album 22, A Million. The singer-songwriter has shared two other tracks – “22 (OVER S∞∞N)” and “10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄,” – and “33, ‘God’” seems to follow suit. We get a disjointed song with intriguingly vague lyrics and distorted vocals from Justin Vernon.
