Australian plunderphonics group The Avalanches has released a new video for their song “Subways“. The song was featured on their July release Wildflower. The music video can be viewed below:
Illustrative duo Mrzyk & Moriceau animate the video with their trademark lucid style. Colors are bright, yet flat and lacking shade. Lines and characters are simple and bold, yet the video still manages to present and incredibly interesting and visually intense style. The video depicts a bunch of colorful cartoon characters, some human, some anthropomorphic blobs, travelling on a psychedelic version of the NYC subway. As the characters travel through colorful imaginings of space and time, sexual imagery constantly pervades. Chasing after sex often gets characters harmed or even killed, most notably with a stilted, afro-sporting man being pushed in front of a train.
The track itself is a groovy summertime treat. Sampling Graham Bonnet’s Bee Gees’ “Warm Ride” and Chandra’s punk classic “Subways”, the track is just as lucid as the video that accompanies it. The song is pure joy, and a finely chopped sum of its already great parts. With punchy percussion and pulsating bass, The Avalanches provide a funky summer treat.
