Amidst an interview about the future of major label Epic Records, CEO L.A. Reid proclaimed A Tribe Called Quest was in the making of a brand new album.
“We have a Tribe Called Quest album coming. I’m really excited about that,” he said.
Reid also claimed the album will feature Phife Dawg as it was recorded before the beloved members untimely passing, and founding band member Jarobi White.
“Man, it’s really something special,” he said. “It’s one of the things that I’m most excited about of everything we’re working on.”
While he didn’t drop much more detail about the upcoming album, fans should be on high alert because the anticipated album could be “coming very soon,” as Reid made sure to note.
The announcement comes as somewhat of a surprise as the world hasn’t heard new material from the acclaimed hip-hip band since their 1998 album The Love Movement. It’s been even longer since Jarobi White was featured on an album, since he left the band in ’91 to attend culinary school. However, White has been seen several times since then with the band he co-founded when they were honored at VH1’s Hip Hop Honors ceremony and in 2010 at a performance during the Rock The Bells concert Festival.
While they haven’t put out new content, the band has still been thriving since releasing a 25 year anniversary album in 2015 and opening up for major rap artist Kanye West for a concert in New York.
