Colorado progressive rock/shoegaze duo A Shoreline Dream has released its third single “Whirlwind” from the ever-evolving upcoming record. This particular release is made all the more significant by the fact that the band has decided to complete and release the entire record one track at a time, right down to the last track.
Although the band is taking their time with each release, with “Time Is a Machine Gun” in October of last year and “Revolvist” earlier this year in March, every single is therefore made all the more meaningful with added depth and layers to each song. The interesting aspect about this album is specifically that the band increases the layering and complexity with each track, making every one slightly more cacophonous than the last.
“Whirlwind” specifically dives into the harsh reality of the constant changes occurring around us and the fact that everything continues to speed forward throughout our short lives. The recent death of lead singer Ryan Policky’s father combined with a murder right next door to where A Shoreline Dream writes and records led to a pretty high motivation to finish and release the track.
The single showcases various elements of various genres, including alternative indie rock, goth and post-punk, shoegaze, and ambient. A Shoreline Dream stacks layers and layers of guitars with low, bass-y vocal chanting that seems overwhelming but in just the right way.
A Shoreline Dream consists of Policky, who handles vocals, guitars, and producing, and Erik Jeffries on guitar. The outfit’s bandcamp description says “a shoreline dream has been best described as creating “melodipsych night music” by combining lush sampled textures, wall of sound dynamics, and vocals layered like a synth, similar in vein to bands such as Cocteau Twins, Porcupine Tree and Sigur Rós.”
Over the past decade of the band’s existence, A Shoreline Dream has produced numerous acclaimed releases under their own label (Latenight Weeknight Records) and has been intensively collaborating with legends such as Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Kramer. Schnauss and Kramer are both well known for their history of pioneering in the experimental electronic genre throughout the 90’s and the 00’s. Recently they landed distribution by cult UK indie label Rocket Girl Records while recording with Ulrich in Leytonstone, and have also remixed an Engineers’ song for progressive label gods K-Scope.
