Heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio passed away in 2010 after battling stomach cancer. This week, however, the musician returned to us in hologram form to perform at Germany’s Wacken Open Air Music Festival with his bandmates.
The hologram was brought to life by Eyellusion, a hologram company that focused on the live entertainment industry. After a year-long effort, Eyellusion’s Ronnie James Dio made history as the first rock hologram to perform live, along with the first hologram to perform with its band in a live festival setting. The hologram used live recorded vocals and thousands of images take of Dio over the years to build the rock pioneer’s likeness.
The sight of Dio was emotional for those close to him. “I cried the first time I saw it,” Dio’s wife, Wendy, Dio’s widow Wendy told Rolling Stone. “It was quite, quite scary. Our crew, when they first saw it at rehearsal, they were in tears. It’s absolutely amazing.” Wendy manages Dio’s legacy and has decided to tour with the hologram next year.
Ronnie James Dio was an American heavy metal singer and songwriter who played a role in a number of groups including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell.
