Over 17 years after releasing their debut LP, mathcore legends The Dillinger Escape Plan have announced they will officially disband following a tour to support their upcoming album Disassociation. The band initially revealed their plans through press release. Disassociation will be released on October 14 through Party Smashers Inc./Cooking Vinyl America.
Guitarist and sole remaining original member Ben Weinman elaborated on the split in an interview with Noisey. He refused to blame fatigue or overall dissatisfaction for the “extended hiatus”.
“I’ve been so involved in every aspect of Dillinger for 20 years that I really need to do something else, collaborate with other people and release something that isn’t only tied to Dillinger because that isn’t really healthy,” Weinman said in the interview. “I know mostly everyone in my phone book mostly because of this band, it’s kind of crazy.”
Weinman acknowledged that while the group currently has no issues touring, they would eventually have had to alter their famously frenetic live shows.
“I mean, it’s probably a fact that we couldn’t do it when we’re 60,” Weinman said, “but we’re not stopping right now because we feel incapable, that’s for sure. There’s a reality that eventually, the type of show that we’re doing wouldn’t be realistic—I’m pretty much falling apart at the limbs at this point—but it doesn’t matter, because when we play, we play.”
Disassociation marks the group’s first official release since 2013’s One of Us Is the Killer, and sixth overall. The Dillinger Escape Plan first gained attention with 1997’s eponymous EP. Their debut album, 1999’s Calculating Infinity, received widespread critical acclaim and pioneered critical elements of both mathcore and metalcore. Original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis left the group following Calculating Infinity, and his replacement, Greg Puciato, has fronted each of their LP’s since then.
Both Weinmanand Puciato will continue to record and perform with other bands following The Dillinger Escape Plan’s disbandment.
Weinman’s Giraffe Tongue Orchestra recently announced they will release their debut LP, Broken Lines, on September 23. Along with Weimann, Alice in Chains‘ William DuVall, Mastodon‘s Brent Hinds, the Mars Volta‘s Thomas Pridgen, and Dethklok’s Pete Griffin feature on the record. Weinman said GTO’s formation is not at all responsible for The Dillinger Escape Plan’s breakup.
Puciato, meanwhile, counts himself a member of two active supergroups, Killer Be Killed and The Black Queen. The groups released their debut LP’s 2014 and 2016 respectively.
