Doomtree artist Dessa released a new single, “Quinine”, earlier today. The single, produced by Paper Tiger and Lazerbeak, is her first new release since her 2013 LP, Parts of Speech.
“Quinine” marks a return to the dark atmospheric pop Dessa debuted on Parts of Speech. Paper Tiger and Lazerbeak’s production is almost entirely artificial, dominated by heavy synthetic percussion and airy synths. The artificial sounds break from traditional Doomtree minimalism, yet do little to restrain Dessa’s voice. “Quinine” is defined by her vocals, which echo hauntingly over the production.
Dessa has not been idle despite not releasing any solo productions since 2013. She is currently in Europe on tour, and has toured unceasingly since Parts of Speech’s release. She featured on Doomtree’s most collaborative recent album, All Hands, and has appeared on songs from multiple in-house Doomtree artists.
Dessa will return home to Minnesota on September 3 to play the Red Herring Block in Duluth. She has not yet announced a new LP, although the new single likely indicates a new release may be on the horizon. SIMS, P.O.S, and Lazerbeak have also recently released music through the Doomtree label. Listen to “Quinine” below.
