Indie singer Neko Case, country legend k.d. lang, and indie folk singer Laura Veirs have combined their distinct musical talents to create their new self titled album case/lang/veirs. Their single “Atomic Number”, which gained traction after the trio performed the song on Good Morning America, can be listened to below:
The track features soaring vocals from all three vocalists, accompanied beautifully and calmly by strings and upbeat percussion. The album itself ended up being a critical and commercial darling, as it played to each of the individual vocalists’ strengths without becoming crowded or overwhelming. lang has broad range and a sultry tone, Case has power and passion, and Veirs has a dry, almost sarcastic yet inviting quality to her voice. Amusingly, the album came about when lang simply emailed the other two asking them to make a record, and within a half hour, they both replied “yes”. Earlier this year, the group released the track “Honey and Smoke”, which won over fans with its lounge Americana aesthetic. The trio also made an appearance at Newport Folk Festival earlier this summer.
Case herself rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the Canadian indie rock group The New Pornographers. Her musical versatility has earned her great respect both in the indie world and in the alt country genre. Her voice is both jagged and heartbreaking, which lend an interesting sense of duality to her music. Case established herself as a national-level musician through her solo work, and furthered this success by joining The New Pornographers and releasing Mass Romantic. Case followed this success with a series of solo albums, both with and without her humorously named backing band “(Neko Case and her) Boyfriends”. Chase is known for her frequent touring schedule. Just last year, she appeared at the Toronto Urban Roots festival alongside Of Monsters and Men and Wilco. Case will soon be embarking on a limited run of live shows, the dates for which can be viewed below:
