Grammy Award winner and acclaimed R&B artist Frank Ocean will finally give the world what we have desperately been waiting for since the “Thinking About You” singer won over our hearts and IPod playlists in 2012.
Finally, three years later Frank Ocean claimed to be dropping his album Boys Don’t Cry this Friday, along with a major video and publication respectively titled “Boys Don’t Cry” which will be available in Apple stores only. For those of you with Spotify or Soundcloud accounts, you’ll have to wait around two weeks for the album to be more widely available since the album will be exclusively released through Apple. This method of releasing music will be following the pattern of successful artists such as Drake, or Future choosing Apple as their release method.
Frank Ocean has been notorious for his teasers and set release dates promoting his upcoming album, and not actually releasing it. Following Channel Orange in 2012, his new album title Boys Don’t Cry was also named in 2012 and set to drop in July of 2015, but it never saw daylight. Fans were then hopeful again in August, when an online storefront suddenly appeared on Frank Ocean’s website. Not only were they were disappointed to find out there wouldn’t be an album that month, but Frank Ocean had also canceled his appearance at FYF fest in Los Angeles due to the unfinished LP.
The world wouldn’t hear from the R&B star for another year, until he finally posted a Due Date library slip on his website with dates from July 2016, dating back to his first release date July 2015.
The next clue wouldn’t come until 3:30a.m. EST when a video was dropped on boysdontcry.co. It seemed to be a live Apple stream of what looks like an empty warehouse with two cluttered work benches placed sidebyside. Currently in the background, only ambient sound can be heard except for the occasional sweeping sound or footstep. However, other reports have stated seeing a man cutting wood with a miter and cable saw. Whether or not it is a live stream has come into question with some reports indicating it may be a video project from Francis Soriano’s director of “Lost” on loop. The video shows up better on mobile versions rather than on a laptop or computer.
It should be noted however, that while Frank Ocean was staying silent on his music, he was sure to speak up during the tragedy in Orlando, Florida at Pulse Nightclub. He took to Tumblr to write a personal note saying,
“I heard on the news that the aftermath of a hate crime left piles of bodies on a dance floor this month,” he wrote. “Many hate us and wish we didn’t exist. Many are annoyed by our wanting to be married like everyone else or use the correct restroom like everyone else.”
There’s no denying that the world is ready for another Frank Ocean experience. Judging from the worldwide success of his only studio album Channel Orange, and the effort he has put into the upcoming LP, we are expecting nothing less than a masterpiece.
