Prince’s family will host an official tribute concert for the late icon on October 13, the Associated Press reports. The concert will be held U.S Bank Stadium in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis. Tickets will go on sale in August, and performers will be announced be announced on a rolling basis.
“We are excited for the opportunity to bring everyone together for the official family celebration of Prince’s life, music and legacy, and there is no better place to do it than his hometown of Minneapolis,” the family said in a statement. “We are honored by the artists who will pay tribute and grateful to those that have worked so hard to make this celebration possible.”
Although performers have yet to be announced, there is likely to be no shortage of artists looking to pay tribute to Prince’s legacy. The official tribute concert will likely end the string of unofficial tribute concerts held in wake of “The Purple One’s” death in April. In May, Madonna and Stevie Wonder paid tribute to Prince at the Billboard Music Awards, drawing harsh criticism over social media. BET’s tribute to Prince featured performances from Jennifer Hudson, The Roots, and Bilal. Countless artists, from Bruce Springsteen to Janelle Monae to LCD Soundsystem, have paid tribute as part of regularly scheduled tour performances.
In additional Prince related news, a court ruling issued on Friday dismissed 29 claims to Prince’s estate. narrowing the number of potential claimants down to six people. Four of these claimants have received court mandates to take a DNA tests.
