Jean Grae has shared a new song titled “What You Came For”, which has been released for Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Marvel Black Panther revival continuing Marvel‘s record of featuring hip-hop in its comics.
Jean Grae, formerly known as What? What?, is an American hip-hop artists who made her start in the underground back in 1995. George Rithm Martinez discovered Grae, and brought her on to record a 5-track demo under the name of Ground Zero. That demo tape quickly found great acclaim and even won a minor award in The Source magazine in 1996. Grae has worked with many well known artists and producers during her career like 9th Wonder, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Immortal Technique. Most recently, Grae has been working freelance, and has also moved into other interests like releasing an audiobook and doing film production. Now, she has really incredible opportunity courtesy of Marvel,“Do I want to submit a brand new song for Marvel‘s Black Panther collaborative video series? Are you kidding? Probably one of the most exciting requests I’ve ever gotten”, she exclaimed.“One, collaborating with Marvel on anything is a dream filled with unicorns. Two, Black friggin’ Panther! Three, Ta-Nehisi is writing it. Four, everything about where we are as a people right now. It’s so important and needed. I’m so proud of everyone involved in this. Now I’m crying”, she added via Pitchfork.
Marvel continues to be a step ahead of the comic game by rolling out the revival of Black Panther comic series accompanied by a monthly video series that connects the world of comics with hip-hop sounds, while writer Ta-Nehisi Coates’ commentary. Marvel has recently worked with many hip-hop artists including Run The Jewels and Jay Z. “What You Came For” is produced by Quelle Chris, and it will play during Marvel‘s Black Panther‘s third promo video for “A Nation Under Our Feet” storyline.
