Synth-pop duo Chairlift have issued a not quite new single, “Get Real”, their first release since January LP Moth. Caroline Polacheck and Patrick Wimberly first recorded the track in 2013, and the song’s artwork, eerily similar to the album’s, indicates that the track was recorded during the Moth sessions.
“Get Real” is cut from the same cloth as Moth’s best tracks, using idiosyncratic pop production not as a distraction, but as a tool to heighten the impact of Polacheck’s soaring vocals. Airy synths mix surprisingly well with guttural baselines and muted synthetic percussion, resulting in understated but successful instrumentation. Polacheck’s voice bounces from octave to octave, serving as the track’s most potent instrument. The single functions as a worthwhile follow-up to the acclaimed Moth, and could fit seamlessly amongst its track list.
To accompany the single, Chairlift released a documentary short containing live footage of “Moth’s” production. The filmmakers also interviewed Polacheck and Wimberly to flesh out the documentary’s look into the production process.
Moth is Chairlift’s third studio LP, and first since 2012. Like its predecessor Something, Moth received broad acclaim. Chairlift are currently on tour, and will likely not return to the studio for some time. Listen to “Get Real” and watch the Moth documentary short below.
