Dallas-based rock trio True Widow has released the first song off of their newly announced album Avvolgere. The album will be released September 23rd through Relapse Records. The band, which has been described as using “volume as an instrument” by NPR, is known for their gigantic, gritty walls of sound. Avvolgere will be the band’s first new album since 2013’s Circumambulation. The released single, “Entheogen”, can be listened to below:
The slow tempo of the track combined with the overbearing bass line and droning guitars exemplifies the basis of the band’s sound, which they dub as “stonegaze”. The soft-spoken vocals provide an interesting contrast to the “wall of noise” sound, as the band seems to place priority on its instrumentation over its lyrics or vocal chops. The band differentiates itself from other shoegaze acts through its grimy production and incredibly slow tempo. After the incredible success of Deafheaven’s 2013 release Sunbather, both shoegaze and the metal-tinged blackgaze have begun to reach far more listeners than ever before. While the genre is not particularly well-known for having pristine, squeaky-clean production, True Widow’s grimy sound will help differentiate it from the pack.
