Many Rivers to Cross Social Justice Festival Announces 2016 Lineup Featuring Public Enemy, John Legend and Common

Caribbean music legend and social activist Harry Belafonte led social justice organization Sankofa.org has announced the lineup for its inaugural human rights event, the “Many Rivers to Cross” Social Justice Music and Arts Festival. The festival will be held the first weekend of October, and will take place outside of Atlanta in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia.

Festival organizers describe the event as “the largest music and arts festival dedicated to racial and social justice.” Musical performers include social justice heavyweights John Legend, Common, Dave Matthews, Carlos Santana, Public Enemy, and Estelle. Featured speakers include Jesse Williams, Dr. Cornel West, actor Danny Glover, and Michelle Alexander.

In addition to featured performances, the festival will serve as a conduit for social commentary. Festival organizers are set to create a “Social Justice Village” to stoke conversation related to Sanfoka.org’s agenda.

Sanfoka.org is an artist led social activist group that partners with grassroots organizations to elevate the voices of the disenfranchised and promote justice, peace, and equality. Belafonte founded his organization with the intent of encouraging fellow performers to inspire positive action.

“Many Rivers will be an opportunity for artists to mobilize audiences through their music and to stir up America’s collective consciousness and commitment to progressive action,” Belafonte said through press release. “It will also provide a crucial space for these artists to connect and collaborate with activists, thought leaders and community organizers from across the country and use their platforms to amplify ideas and solutions to advance human rights for all.”
