Soldier’s Heart- Night by Night

Pretty War

There is a lot to be said about Stockholm band, Soldier’s Heart. To begin with, vocalist Sylvie possesses a soft, airy voice that makes her vocals sound like wind on a cool day. The album Night by Night is breaking barriers by experimenting with sharp edges, catchy choruses and beautiful yet uncomfortable sounds that connect to one another like a puzzle. Sylvie, Laurens, Benjamin, Jasper and Ferre have an enticing way of making the listener’s heartbeat in rhythm through the echo of voice and melody.

Most of the songs on the album are fun and light-hearted. The track titled “Lola Rennt” is filled with prominent synths sound and melody that is easy to fall in love with. The song itself provokes thought about personal pride within a physical, intimate relationship, the tug of war within one’s self during a complicated situation. The lyric “I don’t wanna be part of your victory tonight,” speaks for itself.

The official music video for “African Fire” is made up of life-like graphics of the ocean and sky. In the center of the sky there opens up a black hole which gives a futuristic feel. The graphics feel reminiscent of an 80’s music video although the song itself is modern. In the video, the band members are walking on white ledges and lines that look similar to a video game. There is movement in both the video and song. The flow is smooth and consistent not breaking beats- maintaining one direction.

On the other hand, there is “Spasm” which throws the listener through a loop with its spiraling intro and haunting lyrics. The unsettling creepiness is evident when listening to the accents of crackling noises and heavy bass present throughout the album.

Soldier’s Heart has created the perfect blend of creepiness and lightheartedness that transcends the genre of rock. In turn, Night by Night will stimulate your thoughts but retain your attention through its catchy ballads and relaxed feel.
