Black Moth Super Rainbow frontman and analog electronic musician (quite the oxymoron) Tobacco has just released a music video for “Human Om,” the opening track for his upcoming 4th LP, Sweatbox Dynasty. The album’s name seems appropriate, considering Tobacco’s preference for grimy, “sweaty” sounding music.
Tobacco (né Thomas Fec) is known for utilizing pre-digital instrumentation such as analog synthesizers and tape machines to create his melting melodies and dark textures that grab faces and makes listeners feel like they are in a whole new world of dirt. And the new music video is definitely packed full of this disturbing yet strangely provocative imagery, sure to stay in your head for perhaps much longer than you’d want it to.
The new album finds the Fec “resurrecting an old approach to hack a new path through the muck.” Sweatbox Dynasty presents an intensely psychedelic experience full of strong rhythms that punches through the electronic mud to find its place, stuck in your head and vocals that are barely intelligible yet seems somehow transcendental.
“Human Om” makes listeners feel like they are floating in the air, if the air was so intensely dense that it becomes hard to breathe. A soothing experience that is also somewhat nauseating. The music video for the track was self-directed by Tobacco, perhaps explaining the utter accuracy with which the video showcases the scuzzy atmosphere of the song.
Distorted rubber masks of various celebrities, politicians, and even animals on seizure inducing backgrounds nodding along to the synthesized warbles lulls the watcher into an uneasy trance.
Fec says that “The video is a concept album about music. The lyrics are important too because they were inspired by the guy who invented Coachella and I think we will reach festival goers in new and innovative ways. Really just trying to take music and inject it with a little bitta rock n roll. It’s really just a two-minute break from reality that doesn’t mean anything.”
