Gothic folk staple Marissa Nadler has released a video for her recently issued track “Janie in Love”. The video release comes two weeks after the premiere of her new LP, Strangers, which features “Janie in Love”.
“Janie in Love” brings Nadler out of her more reserved comfort zone, pushing her sound in a more grunge-like direction and featuring desert guitars and shuffling drums. While her typically statuesque voice towers above the production, she eschews balladry for a harsher, earthier sound. Lyrically, she spins a tale of a doomed relationship broken down by her lover’s vanity and hard-headedness.
The track’s video combines sun-bathed forest scenery with breathtaking black and white abstract imagery. Her video oscillates between a character walking alone in a forest and various animated objects crumbling. The devastation depicted reflects her lyrical intensions. Her chosen character cannot escape the brutality and pain of her relationship and thus withers away in the dusty air.
Nadler released Strangers on May 20 to universal acclaim. An mxdwn review said the album employs “haunting and delicate storytelling with caustic confidence”. The album marks Nadler’s seventh studio LP and second release through Sacred Bones Records/Bella Union. She is set to tour throughout the summer, and will likely continue touring into the fall.
