Indie pop group Kitten has released a new single, “Steal the Night”, and its accompanying video. This marks their second single released this year, and will likely feature on a planned upcoming album.
“Steal the Night” sees frontwoman Chloe Chaidez trade her traditionally towering vocals for sultry monotones. She essentially raps over Roxy Music Avalon era production, allowing the song’s prevalent yet muted keyboards and trumpet interludes to dominate the track. She occasionally bursts into her more commonly employed upper octave, only to quickly fall back into the song’s standard monotone. Piercing synthesizers crescendo and then fall in the background, accenting the maximalist production.
The song’s lyrics give Chaidez a sort of Robin Hood like power to take back happy moments for the disenfranchised. She promises to “steal the night” away from the empowered for any and all forms of outsider, including outsiders excluded from society due to their own misdeeds. In the song’s accompanying video, film of political events and dancing alternate with pictures of Chaidez herself.
Kitten hopes to release a new album shortly, but revealed through Twitter that they will need to crowdfund to properly issue an LP. The group will engage in a pledge campaign to raise funds, meaning they will agree to complete certain tasks after receiving a set amount of pledged donations.
The group released an EP, Heavan or Somewhere in Between” last March. The EP was self-released by Chaidez and marked her group’s fourth EP. They have yet to release a formal LP. Watch the video for “Steal the Night” below.
