Katy Goodman, member of La Sera and Vivian girls, and Greta Morgan, member of Springtime Carnivore, are set to release an album featuring punk covers later this summer. Take It, It’s Yours will release on August 26th via Polyvinyl.
Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan teamed up for this album that will feature their own versions of classic punk and new wave songs originally from The Replacements, Buzzcocks, The Misfits, The Stooges, Blondie, Billy Idol, and more.
Listen to the artists take on The Replacements “Bastards of Young” below via Stereoboard. Stereogum on the song,”Opening not with a tin wire guitar riff but rather a reverb-dipped breeze reminiscent of Real Estate, Goodman and Morgan sweetly sing Paul Westerberg’s opening lines… as if they actually came from the last Jenny Lewis album. Replacing Westerberg’s guttural throttle with these women’s harmony-driven delivery shifts the original’s mood of dissatisfied confrontation towards one of sardonic defiance”.
Some cover songs on the album like “Where Eagles Dare” and “Sex Beat” are unchanged from their original, but other songs are changed completely. Iggy Pop’s proto-punk anthem “I Wanna Be Your Dog” is transformed into a dark romance record. Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” is switched to a mournful folk ballad, and Bad Brain’s “Pay to Cum” is surprisingly changed to a spectral western ballad. Goodman commented on the interest of the two to cover “Pay to Cum”,”On the surface a song like ‘Pay to Cum’ seems really masculine, but to me, the lyrics are really more about freedom”, “You have the right to sing, you have the right to dance. When you have two girls harmonizing on these songs, they take on a new meaning, because you’re listening in a different way”, she added.
The two artists worked with Drew Fischer at Comp-NY Recording. The duo handled all the recording of the instruments themselves with Goodman playing bass, and Morgan on the guitars, keys, and drums. The results of the reportedly sound like “the soundtrack to some lost Grindhouse noir film” and funny enough “What would Quentin Tarantino Do” was the mantra during the recording process. Upon scrubbing the fuzz and grime of the records Morgan stated that they found something interesting,”hidden messages that might be obscured by the tempos or the distortion”. Morgan also added,It definitely shows the durability of these songs”, “If we can re-imagine them as much as we did, it just shows how solid the skeletons of those songs are”.
The duo found the title of their album Take It, It’s Yours in an original version of “Bastards of Young”. The duo also thanked the artists who originally blessed us with their work, “We sort of imagined that the artists handed us these songs,” Morgan says. “These songs helped shaped who we are,” Goodman says. “They gave us the songs, and now we get to give them back as our thank you.”
