Deftones made a comeback this year with their latest album Gore. In support of the new record, they’ve made a handful of appearances, including Iceland’s Secret Solace festival. Frontman Moreno didn’t stop there, though. In what is being dubbed as “the world’s first public gig inside a volcano” Moreno played an intimate three-song acoustic set inside the shaft of the Thrihnukagigur volcano. 20 adventurous fans paid 250,000 Icelandic krona (roughly $1,970), walked 2.5 miles or took a helicopter, and stood through a 400 foot elevator ride to attend the mini-set and be a part of history. The trek was reported to take about 2 and a half hours. BBC noted that the conditions, such as the 40 degree Fahrenheit temperature, affected the tuning of the musicians.
The set was a part of this week’s Secret Solstice Festival in Reykjavík, Iceland. According to BBC, Moreno performed a Morrissey song, Deftones’ White Pony track “Change (In the House of Flies),” and a song off of David Bowie’s Blackstar album. Local act Snorri Helgason opened for Moreno with a quick set. Check out a clip from the gig below.
The performance was not as dangerous as one might initially expect it to be. Thrihnukagigur is dormant; the volcano has not erupted in over 4,000 years and according to experts, is not expected to blow anytime soon, as opposed to Eyjafjallajökul which made headlines when it erupted in 2010 and wreaked havoc on the Icelandic airline industry.
Deftone’s Gore was released earlier this year and is the group’s eighth studio album, which included single Prayers/Triangle. The video for the single was released in March. The group will embark on North American tour in support of the album, beginning July 31 ad includes a number of festival appearances, such as Houston Open Air Festival in September. They will be supported at a select number of stops by Swedish punk legends Refused.
