Legendary Swedish prog-everything band Opeth has announced a new North American tour. The tour will begin at Ozzfest Meets Knotfest on September 24 in San Bernardino. The band will continue touring throughout North America before concluding October 26th in Vancouver. The band’s upcoming new album, Sorceress, is set to be released this fall through Opeth’s own Modorbalaget Records. The album is the highly anticipated followup to the 2014’s critically acclaimed Pale Communion.
Way back in 1990, Opeth formed as a death metal band in Stockholm, Sweden. Over the years, Opeth went through many lineup changes, but singer/songwriter and guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt remained a driving force of creativity within the band. Opeth gradually shifted from a traditional death metal sound to the more grandiose, dynamic sound of progressive rock. Their songs frequently include acoustic guitars and clean vocals, as well as the occasional death growling. Opeth is also famous for incorporating a Mellotron into their work. A Mellotron is essentially a piano that plays pre-recorded sound effects to add samples to music. While this instrument mostly died out in the 1980’s, several notable bands of the 1990’s, including Opeth, began to reincorporate the instrument into their music. Hardcore Opeth fans were recently able to show their dedication by purchasing the band’s signature stout.
Opeth will be accompanied by doom metal/stoner rock act The Sword. The Sword’s sound is heavily influenced by both classic rock acts such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as well as thrasher acts such as Slayer.
