In a sharp turn away from December release “Champions of Unrestricted Beauty”, Sleigh Bells newest song “Rule Number One” returns the group to its brazen noise pop roots. The new single, released earlier this week, marks the duo’s first release since the aforementioned December single.
“Rule Number One” trades “Champions of Unrestricted Beauty” synth heavy prettiness and relative uniformity for bold rock instrumentation and a sharp mid-song divide. The new track opens with Alexis Kraus chanting vocals over dark and twitchy classic rock enthused Derek Miller guitar. Near the song’s midpoint, the song switches gears, layering trademark Kraus power pop vocals over soaring keyboards and thudding base lines.
Miller revealed on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio that he and Krauss produced the track over a year ago. The song was produced during studio sessions conducted following the release of 2013 LP Bitter Rivals. The group did not comment on whether “Rule Number One” would feature on an upcoming album.
