The Devil Makes Three Announce their new album Redemption & Ruin will be released on August 26th.
Redemption & Ruin is a concept project that includes hand picked songs by the band themselves to give a look into what inspired the bands founding and direction. The Devil Makes Three reportedly contemplated countless amounts of songs that influenced them, and finally settled on 12 tracks with “give or take a few bonus tracks”. The album is divided into two sides, “Redemption” on the front, and “Ruin” on the back. The album features cover songs by selected heroes of the band including, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Hudson Whittaker, Phil Moore, Tampa Red, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits, Hank Williams, and more. The album also features a long list of special features including, Emmylou Harris, Tim O’Brien, Jerry Douglas, Darrell Scott, and guitarist Duane Eddy.
The Devil Makes Three describes the “Redemption” side of the album has mostly gospel songs, but leaning towards “the darker end of the spectrum of religious music”. The “Ruin” side of the album is described as having a “vice” feel to it. During the process of picking songs to cover, The Devil Makes Three stated that the “gospel” and “vice” spectrums were at the forefront of making their choices. There wasn’t any in-between, it had to be “all or nothing” TMD3 says.
The Devil Makes Three’s last two albums I’m a Stranger Here and Stomp and Smash released back in 2011 and 2013. Many fans thought the albums captured the live sound that makes The Devil Makes Three so adored. Before the bands 2011 live studio album Stomp and Smash, the band was struggling to get good reviews because many would say that you “had to see them live”, and that the albums couldn’t fully capture the bands energy. According to the general consensus on the 2 most recent albums, the band may have finally found a way to pack that “live” energy into their albums. With the lineup of tracks that The Devil Makes Three has compiled on Redemption & Ruin, it seems that the band may continue its lucky streak.
Along with the new album, The Devil Makes Three has announced a winter tour for later this year. The band is also currently on a world tour, and will be returning to the U.S. in September (dates below).
