The Strokes have just released the lyric video for their song, “Drag Queen.” The track is off their new EP, Future Present Past, available everywhere today.
Coinciding with the title of the EP, the video is a combination of 90s retro and futuristic visions. It features Windows 95 pop-ups with text like “File not found,” warped VHS images of running robotic forms, red lips and and a hand holding a globe with the caption “THANK YOU INTERNET.” Indeed, it seems that technology is the primary theme within the song. The video is even filmed with two black stripes along the sides, as if it was shot with a cell phone camera. The lyrics, however, are a bit more mystic. While the lyrics are up for interpretation, it’s safe to say the band is unhappy. “I don’t understand, your f*cked up system,” the chorus crows, “This sinister city/try to sell the water/try to sell the air/try to sell your daughter/try to sell her hair.”
“Drag Queen” is one of three original tracks that will be included on Future Present Past. The other new songs are titled “Threat of Joy” and “Oblivious,” respectively, while the fourth song will be a remix of the latter track by Strokes drummer Fab Moretti. This highly anticipated EP will be the first new music from the band since 2013’s Comedown Machine. The Strokes have also planned a pop-up show to celebrate the release of the new album. The pop-up, located at 350 Bowery at Great Jones Street in New York City, will stay open until Sunday, June 5 from 12-9 p.m. Be sure to check out Future Present Past today.
