Last year, Speedy Ortiz impressed us all with Foil Deer. The critic’s lexicons including words such as ‘dark,’ ‘snarling,’ and ‘complex’ to describe the risks Ortiz took. Almost all agreed that these risks brought about a deeper and more evolved band.
According to Consequence of Sound, the band has announced plans to follow up their sophomore success with 4-track EP, Foiled Again. The group has dubbed the short compilation an “addendum” to Foil Deer, containing two new tracks from the Foil Deer sessions, along with two remixes of “Puffer.” The EP is set to be released June 3rd through Carpark records.
While fans will need to wait until June to listen to the full set, new track “Death Note” is available to stream via Soundcloud.
For those who are wondering – yes, the song is named after the anime Death Note. The manga series chronicles the adventures of a high school student after he discovers a supernatural notebook that grants the holder with the ability to kill anyone by simply writing their name within said book. The song deals with themes of depression and is about “writing through your depression as a way to get better, and how in a way a death note can be a kind of love letter to yourself.” Stream the full song, above.
The “Puffer” Lazerbeak remix features guest vocals from Lizzo, who also appeared on previous track “Basement Queens” with frontwoman Sadie Dupuis.
The band will be releasing the EP in between gigs – Seepy Ortiz is in the midst of their U.S. tour that will continue throughout the summer.
