Deftones’ lead singer, Chino Moreno, has formed a new supergroup named Saudade with some members of the bands Bad Brains, Cro-mags and more.
A new single bundle has just been released by the newly formed supergroup, Saudade. The single bundle was released via BitTorrent in support of their self-titled, instrumental debut track. The new track can be downloaded and streamed here.
Saudade is made up with lead singer Chino Moreno (Deftones), guitarist Dr. Know (Bad Brains), John Medeski (Medeski, Martin & Wood) on keyboard, guitarist Chuck Doom (Crosses) and drummer Mackie Jayson (Cro-Mags, Bad Brains). According to Rolling Stone, the unique name of the band stems from a Portuguese word that means “a feeling of longing, melancholy or nostalgia,” a feeling that anyone can relate to at some point in their lives.
There has been no other information on the band’s plans or on the project’s future.
The new group is fronted by Moreno, who has made reputation for himself with his work outside of Deftones. He has fronted the bands Team Sleep and Crosses as well as being featured on several other tracks over the years. Moreno also fronted the band Palms, which was made up of the members of the then freshly disbanded metal group Isis.
In Deftones news, the band’s eighth studio album was released earlier this month. The new album is called Gore and has seen a positive response since its release. The band will continue their tour across North America in support of the album. The tour is set to end sometime in August.
In Bad Brains news, the group has launched a campaign to raise $100,000 to help Dr. Know after he was hospitalized in late 2015. He suffered from cardiac arrest and was on life support for two weeks, as reported by Rolling Stone. The situation was one that left many fans, friends and family very panicked as the doctors gave the guitarist a 5 percent chance at recovery.
Another band member of Bad Brains, H.R., launched a campaign of his own to raise some money to help pay his own medical bills. The bills started stacking when he went in to receive treatment for a rare headache disorder.
Medical issues aside, the band is set to play in a superjam in New York as part of the AftroPunk NYC Festival. The superjam will also have members of the bands Fishbone and Living Colour on stage.
