Jean-Michel Jarre has just released a music video for the song, “Exit,” off his upcoming album Electronica Volume 2: The Heart Of Noise. The track features former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden and targets the issue of digital privacy.
The video itself is a rather literal representation of digital privacy, or lack thereof, in our world. “Exit” is 4 minutes of jittery flashes of news headlines, satellites in space, security cameras, and other imagery that would triggers a sense of paranoia. There is also frantic typing on keyboards and phones, which presumably symbolizes the unhealthy relationship between humans and technology. Snowden appears halfway through the song, delivering a moving monologue on digital privacy. “Technology can actually increase privacy,” Snowden says on the track. “The question is: Why are our private details that are transmitted online, why are your private details that are stored on our personal devices, any different than the details and private records of our lives that are stored in our private journals?”
“Exit” and the collaboration with Snowden are representative of Jarre’s background. He is a UN Ambassador for UNESCO and activist for Human Rights, and has campaigned relentlessly over the years for the right to free speech. In the press release for “Exit,” the electronic pioneer states that technology, music, politics, privacy, controversy and more are the common themes of his upcoming album. He has the same passion for these issues as Snowden, who he sat down with last month for RollingStone.com to discuss music, politics, and more. Jarre called Snowden a “modern hero” for daring to speak out about the controversial issue of digital privacy.
Jean-Michel Jarre will release his new album, Electronica Volume 2: The Heart Of Noise, on May 6. He also has an upcoming appearance at Bluedot and is set to embark on a European tour. Check out tour dates below.
