Will Minneapolis be the new Memphis? Perhaps, as it has just been released that Prince’s Palace in Minnesota is going to be converted into Museum in honor of him, and for all whom he inspired. Envisioned to be a sort of Midwestern Graceland, er, Lakeland, the 55,000 sq. ft. Paisley Park Estate is valued at $6.6 M and contains, among other things, a recording studio and a nightclub. Prince’s Brother-in-law Maurice Phillips told The Sun, “We will turn Paisley Park into a museum in Prince’s memory.”
Prince’s passing has inspired all sorts of things, catalogues of his accomplishments, celebrity covers, and even his former back up band The Revolution is getting back together. Trey Prince, an international man of mystery, he left no will. Despite this, according to his longtime musical collaborator, Shiela E, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the idea for a museum originally came from Prince himself, as he’d wanted to create one and had been collecting memorabilia to that effect for quite some time. Sheila E. was singing with Prince when the estate first broke ground back in 1986.
The Paisley Park Estate is located in a small town called Chanhassen about 2o miles Southwest of Minneapolis. Photographer Kevin Mazur was one of the first people to ever get into the building back in 1990. Mazur told ET, “There was a whole mystique about Paisley Park. Everybody heard about it but no one was ever in there.” One hot item Mazur recalled was the customized 1981 Hondamatic Honda CB400A motorcycle that Prince road in Purple Rain.
