Following the passing of Pop Icon Prince, The Revolution, the band that backed Prince on 1999 and Purple Rain, is rejoining to do some more shows. Many artists are and were inspired by Prince, for example Billy Corgan recently sang an intimate cover of “Cross”, Chris Martin covered “Raspberry Beret” with a group of 8th graders, and The Boss did “Purple Rain”. Though possibly, the ones who got to play with him, felt it most. Cue The Revolution. This band, which includes, Bobby Z., Brown Mark, Matt Fink, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, got to spend some time together in Minnesota while mourning their former bandmate, and discovered they’d like to keep playing. It has been twenty years since they last played together.
The video posted below, which first appeared on Brown Mark’s Facebook page, has over 200K views. In it, five “alternate versions” of the band all introduce themselves, and then they are swapped out for the “real versions”. A very simple yet clever stunt that gets the point across. The “double version” echoing the double album 1999. After gathering together in the absence of Prince, it seems appropriate that they have cried out, once more unto the breach good friends, once more!
