With the recent and unexpected death of legendary musician and music innovator Prince, several artists have been making tributes to him through various methods. Billy Corgan, leader of The Smashing Pumpkins, joined the ranks and made an acoustic cover of Prince’s classic song “The Cross”, from his album Sign ‘O’ The Times’. Corgan united with touring member Sierra Swan to create the cover to pay tribute to the music legend.
Corgan also mentioned that he is considering making an acoustic solo album, specifying that he doesn’t think an acoustic solo album with his band The Smashing Pumpkins would work out very well at the moment. He says this is mostly because the expectation of the band is to play straight-up rock, and he is fine with that, but he thinks an acoustic album from the band wouldn’t go over as well, so he thinks it would be best to try out an acoustic solo album first.
About a month ago, James Iha performed with The Smashing Pumpkins at a show in LA for the first time in over a decade. The only original member missing was the original bassist, D’arcy Wretzky. Shortly after, Billy Corgan performed a brand-new Smashing Pumpkins song, an acoustic song debuted only in front of VIP attendees of a concert. The song is currently untitled. The band is just now finishing up its spring tour with American singer-songwriter Liz Phair.
