Serj Tankian has released a new song “Ari Im Sokag” that he composed for the film 1915. He orchestrated and sang on the track alongside Larisa Ryan.
The composition is truly one of the most beautiful and somber that Serj has ever created and he has had his fair share of music experience. From his years of being a fundamental part of the band: System Of A Down to his independent music. Serj has worked with orchestra, jazz, electronica and various directions of hard rock said Loudwire.
“The film 1915 is about a theater director who puts on this production on April 24, 2015, the one-hundredth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide,” Tankian told Alternative Press.“He has this dark mystical intuition that things are going to change, that there’s going to be almost a time warp because of the event itself. It’s the first film I’ve seen that deals with the diaspora trauma of loss; how the descendants of people who died in the genocide feel about it, in the U.S., France, Argentina and other parts of the world. I’ve never seen a film like that.”
It is a very important project for Serj not only because it is his first full length film score but the music he has created supports a cause that is dear to his heart. He has been open about how important his Armenian heritage is to him and will do whatever it takes to bring awareness to the genocide that happened there just over one-hundred years ago. His band System Of A Down embarked on the “Wake Up The Souls Tour” to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the genocide to bring awareness to the public. The tour ended in Armenia with a three hour show. He was even awarded the Armenian’s Prime Minister Medal for all of his contributions and recognition towards the cause.
Serj hopes to do more with his rock music in the near future. “I’m looking at different options in scoring between video games and films. I’m also writing some new rock songs,” He said. “We’ll see where they go and what happens with them.”
However, he has no plans at this point to play with System Of A Down for the rest of the year.
