Beth Orton has had a long career spanning over 20 years. She’s created 5 records in the folk genre; put forth collaborations with William Orbit, Red Snapper, and the Chemical Brothers; sang with Annie Lennox and 22 other female artists to bring about awareness of mother-to-child HIV transmission to unborn children in Africa; and received endless critical praise for her mostly stripped down and sometimes electronic music.
The genre tide is changing for Orton. Now the singer is taking a left turn by completely abandoning her acoustic sound for her next album Kidsticks, slated for a May 27th release. Orton has begun to share her work by releasing one of the songs “1973” through Stereogum, featuring Twin Shadow. Kidsticks is the first full-length album Orton released since 2012’s Sugaring Season. The newly released synth-heavy track features guitars by George Lewis Jr. and drums by Guillermo E. Brown and production by Andrew Hung.
The track, much like the singer’s first single “Moon,” is a return to her electronic roots we enjoyed on Trailer Park and a departure from the folkstyle music we have become to listening to in recent albums such as Daybreaker and Sugaring Season. According to Under the Radar, The album feature collaborations with Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor, Twin Shadow’s George Lewis, and Dustin O’Halloran from Winged Victory for the Sullen. Orton is hitting the road in support of the album. She will be kicking things off in Chicago this June and move eastward along the coast before finishing off her trek on the west coast. The tour is currently planned entirely within the month of June.
