Just moments ago headlining the main stage at Coachella, LCD Soundsystem dropped in a couple of huge surprises into their set. Near the set’s finale they played, “New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down,” a song serious fans will remember they often closed out shows with at their “farewell” tour in 2011. This time they did it with a twist. During the breakdown before the song’s final outro, the group shifted, playing a sparse piano and sang a few lines of Guns N’ Roses’ classic hit “November Rain.” Yes, the Coachella 2016 audience heard James Murphy sing, “‘Cause nothin’ lasts forever / And we both know hearts can change / And it’s hard to hold a candle / In the cold November rain,” an apparent nod to both their short-lived break-up and also the Saturday festival headliners Guns N’ Roses themselves.
Not long later–following a stellar inclusion of “Dance Yrself Clean” and before the expected finale of “All My Friends”–they did one better doing a full cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” in tribute to the recently departed superstar. The set also featured many classic staples from their career including “Yeah,” “Get Innocuous,” “Someone Great,” “Us v. Them” and “Losing My Edge.” Watch snippets of the performances below. We’ll update here with more videos as they become available.
After a fast rise to success behind just three albums in the 2000’s (LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver and This is Happening), the group quite surprisingly disbanded at the apex of their popularity. They ended off with massive three-hour finale at New York City’s Madison Square Garden in 2011. It was just over four years later when they announced their reunion in October of 2015. Not long later in December they announced their released their first new song “Christmas Will Break Your Heart.”
