Mr. Lif is back
Mr. Lif has not come out with an album in seven years. Don’t Look Down is a mixture of a reflective look into his life as an artist. The album speaks of his personal journey of trial and errors throughout his career.
In just the course of 10 songs Lif finds a poetic way to tell his story without coming off as being too preachy. His style from the beginning of his career has almost always been politically motivating for his listeners.
The Boston native may have taken his time on coming out with an album, but the way he constructs his lyrics through each verse is honestly…mind-blowing. Each lyric needs to be carefully listened to in order to understand what he is trying to convey.
In an interview with The Source he talks about how the album is asking ‘Can I bounce back from this?’ He wasn’t only speaking for himself however, it was a broader question that many people face when dealing with trial and error situations.
The third song on the album, “Everyday We Pray” really deals with the personal situation and praying for discipline to not veer off a personal goal. The song sounds like a long prayer to God for guidance.
“Fridge full of food but your soul is missing somethin….” An interpretation of that is having everything a person wants in the world but within there is a spiritually something that is missing. The ‘character’ of the song is struggling with his worldview of what he’s supposed to be doing.
The fifith song, “A Better Day” deals with the positivity of any situation and self-control. The chorus of the song says, “A better day, a better life, see it and believe it, it’s in your eyes.” Hence the main character throughout the entire album being in control of where is career will go.
Again, the album needs to be listened to carefully and in order. It is one long story of a regular person who struggled with failure and dealing with it.
Don’t Look Down gives a perfect storyline of someone creating their own hell and learning how to overcome that darkness.
