Serj Tankian’s first full-length film score, 1915: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, is set for release on April 22. The album will be available around a year after the theatrical release of the 2015 film of the same name, and marks Tankian’s first venture into film scoring.
According to a Billboard interview with Tankian, the film was released last year to “commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.” The directors waited to release the album to ensure talk of the genocide, in addition to raising further awareness for the film. This topic is very dear to Tankian, who has been very open about his dedication to his Armenian heritage. His band, System of Down, embarked on their “Wake Up the Souls” tour last year to coincide with the Armenian Genocide, ending in the group playing a nearly three-hour show in Armenia. Additionally, in 2011 Tankian was awarded the Armenian Prime Minister’s Medal for his contributions to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the advancement of music.
In addition to the scores that made it into the film, the new album has 4 bonus tracks, including a track titled “100 Years.” A video for the track was released in April of 2015 to commemorate the centennial of the Genocide that affected Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians. On Tankian’s official website, he explained that he wrote themes based on the film’s script “to figure out what the emotional centerpiece of it is and then extrapolate the sub-themes and build other themes.”
While 1915: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is Tankian’s first full-length film score, he has a wide musical resume that expands into film soundtracks, video games, orchestral music and more. Of course, he is best known for being the frontman of the legendary rock band System of a Down. Since their formation in 1994, the group has released five studio albums, been nominated for multiple Grammys and earned a reputation as one of the best bands in metal. While it has been over a decade since System of a Down released their last album, 2005’s Hypnotize, it has been hinted that the group could be working on new record in the near future. Meanwhile, Tankian states in the Billboard interview that he is very excited about his new project and hopes to continue with film scoring in the future.
