Musician Laura Jane Grace from the band Against Me! will continue with her lineup of North Carolina shows. Recently, North Carolina has passed an anti-LGBT law. A Buzzfeed article containing information about the anti-LBGT bill that passed in North Carolina stated that the bill was created to ensure privacy in public restrooms. This law will ban transgender people from using certain restrooms that trans people would be able to use based on the gender they identify with. Many other states, including Kansas, have put laws in place banning trans-gendered people from using their identified restrooms and must use the restrooms that are coordinated with the gender at birth.
“I’m going to create an event around the show as a form of protest to say that despite whatever stupid laws they enact, trans people are not going to be scared,” said Laura Jane Grace to Buzzfeed,”They are not going to go away.”
Grace has refused to cancel her concert as a form of a protest. Musicians Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams have already canceled their concerts in North Carolina. Her comments on Springsteen and Adams cancelling their concerts, in Grace’s opinion look more like an alliance with the state, she said to Buzzfeed. The punk-rock musician who came out as transgender in 2012 stated that to protest for her and her band means to perform. “But visibility is more important than ever,” Laura says, “To go there and have the platform of a stage to stand on and speak your mind and represent yourself.”
Against Me! will perform at their scheduled event in North Carolina. LGBT organizations in the tar-heel state are welcomed to table at their event. Laura Jane Grace will be publishing her upcoming memoir on her life and the transitions that came with her coming out as transgender.
