The 28th and final album of David Bowie, Blackstar had one more music video to release. The animated video for the single “I Can’t Give Everything Away” was created by the designer Jonathan Barnbrook, who also created the album cover of the final album Blackstar.
“I Can’t Give Everything Away” is currently being played worldwide. After Blackstar was released on the musicians 69th birthday, the album has since sold over a million copies and has been named the number one album in more than twenty countries. Including the United States and the United Kingdom, where Bowie grew up most of his life. The video for the third single is a tribute to the legacy and the music that the Star Man left behind on planet Earth.
“This is really a very simple little video that I wanted to be ultimately positive,” Barnbrook says to Rolling Stone Magazine. “We start off in black and white world of Blackstar, but in the final chorus we move to brilliant color, I saw it as a celebration of David, to say that despite the adversity we face, the difficult things that happen such as David’s passing, that human beings are naturally positive, they look forward and can take the good from the past and use it as something to help with the present. We are a naturally optimistic species and we celebrate the good that we are given.”
Barnbrook and Bowie’s working relationship started back in 2002 with the cover art for the album Heathen. The sample cover featured a prototype of the Barnbrook-designed Priori font. Since then Barnbrook and Bowie have collaborated for the covers of 2003’s Reality and 2013’s The Next Day. Barnbrook even worked on the graphics for the touring visual and art exhibition on David Bowie, David Bowie is.
