Andrew Bird has just released the music video for “Capsized.” The song is the latest off his new album, Are You Serious, out today via Loma Vista.
It’s easy to be a bit confused when watching “Capsized.” The majority of the video shows Bird with a literal target on his back, running from a mysterious entity that seems to be chasing him. Of course, it cuts between scenes of this and Bird onstage, but he ultimately ends up underwater. This combined with the chasing scenes are enough to cause a bit of anxiety. What is he running from? Why does he keep looking back at it? Are we all really running from something? These questions all arise in this song, and will likely make you watch the video repeatedly for answers.
As for the song itself, it is a soft rock tune that is not too different than anything else on the radio today. The lyrics are simple and often repetitive, with the chorus stating, “And when you wake up, another sunrise, Another break up, this ship is capsized.” This is fitting, when one considers that the video takes place in a dream-like landscape and is ultimately about running away from your demons, whatever they may be.
Bird has previously released three singles off the new album, the latest being the dreamy and melodic tune “Roma Fade” that you can read about here. Are You Serious will be Bird’s first full-length of original material in several years, and features collaborations with Fiona Apple and Blake Mills. However, while he has not released original material for quite some time, Bird has remained active in music through touring and a 2015 five-part Canyon short film series.
Bird is currently on tour, and a part of the tour’s proceeds will benefit his recently announced partnership with the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, a movement aimed at reducing gun violence in America. Be sure to pick up Are You Serious Now today and check out tour dates below.
