Fitz and the Tantrums have announced that their upcoming self-titled album will be available June 10 via Elektra Records. The group also released the first single from the album, “HandClap,” an electrifying tune that just makes you want to get up and dance.
The group burst onto the music scene in 2011 with their debut album, Pickin’ Up the Pieces. LA Weekly states that the group’s sound “features a throwback, soulful sound build around keyboards, sax and the exuberant vocals of Fitzpatrick and co-lead vocalist Noelle Scaggs,” and this is a very accurate description. Fitz and the Tantrums continued to pump out pop hits with their 2013 sophomore effort, which contained favorites like “Out of My League” and “The Walker.” Now, the band hopes to keep up the stream of steady pop hits while also exploring their own challenges as artists. Lead singer Michael “Fitz” Patrick says of the new album, “We’ve always tried to push ourselves at every turn. For our third album, we continued to challenge ourselves, taking care not to write the same record again.”
If the first single is any indication, this will not be a problem for Fitz and the Tantrums. “Handclap” is a brutally catchy hit that will no doubt be all over the radio before we know it. The band has given an elaborate description for the track. “‘HandClap’ is a primal tale of love and lust, a call to arms in the late hours of the night,” says Fitz. “It’s the X-rated version of ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ happening on a dance floor.” Here’s hoping we can all look forward to more catchy pop hits when the album is released June 10.
Fitz and The Tantrums will celebrate the album’s release with a North American headline tour that kicks off on April 16 at The National in Richmond, VA. Fans who pre-order the album from Fitz and The Tantrums‘ online store will automatically receive code enabling them to purchase tour tickets on Tuesday, March 29. They will also play PromoWest and Sloss Music & Arts Festival in upcoming months.
