Magma Live at The Regent Theater in Los Angeles, California

Magma performing "Theusz Hamtaahnk", a song that hasn't been performed live in over 10 years

Laurent Goldstein, director of the upcoming Magma documentary “The Music of Magma”

Magma’s music had such an impact on me the first time I listened to it two years ago during a drive back up to Los Angeles from San Diego. I’ve never heard such music. The vocal repetitive chants, the hard hitting powerful bass, the fantastic drums! I’ve never heard such intense music before, and I’ve listened to the craziest death black metal music you could imagine. Nothing compares to the intensity and power that Magma’s music has. Wether it be the out of this world space opera masterpiece Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh or the dark mystical journey into an ancient mummies cursed tomb in Köhntarkösz. Another classic album is Üdü Wüdü which includes the song “De Futura.” This song has one of the most intense riffs ever in space and progressive rock history. Experimental hip-hop group Death Grips even sampled the song on their track “Known For It.” Magma’s music has been around for more than 40 years and it’s music is still powerful to this day.

Magma played their second North American concert at The Regent Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.

The setlist was filled with classic Magma epics such as “Theusz Hamtaahk,” “Zombies” and my personal favorite, “Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh.” Listening to this band live was such a wonderful trip. Christian Vander performance was at his best and the vocals from Stella Vander, Isabelle Feuillebois and Herve Aknin were incredible. If you ever have a chance to see them in concert, do yourself a favor and go. It wonderful to see the amount of enthusiasm and excitement they get from fans still to this day. Their music is powerful enough to change lives and I am so grateful to have found “Magma” music early enough to catch them perform.

Following Magma on their North American tour was Laurent Goldstein, director and friend of Christian Vander, who has been filming the band for an upcoming documentary called “The Music of Magma”. The movie will tell the story of how Magma came to be and the impact it’s had on so many lives all over the world.

They currently have an indiegogo crowdfunding campaign set up to help finish production on the film. You can find the link at the bottom of the article.

Christian Vander receiving roaring applause and a standing ovation from the Los Angeles audience

The audience was going insane for the music. Every song ending would end with astounding applause from the audience. Even Robert Trujillo, bass player of Metallica, was there to witness the power of Magma. I saw Robert even getting really close up to the stage to take some photos of the band. It was great seeing a huge rock star like him fawn over Magma.

Mauricio Alvarado: I've been a concert photographer for the past 5 years. My work has been featured on various music magazines and websites. Some of the bands I've photographed are Yes, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Santana, and many more. I'm obsessed with 70's Progressive Rock music. I enjoy photographing bands that I grew up listening to. I'm also a big vinyl record collector since I was in High School. I always enjoy taking my albums to shows and getting them signed by the bands.
