Lorely Rodriguez, aka Empress Of, has joined forces with Darkstar to release the record “Reformer” last week. Now, Rodriguez has returned with a song on her own.
The song titled, “Woman is a Word”, “finds the songstress calling out someone who isn’t treating her properly and seems to misunderstand her as a person,” according to Consequence of Sound. “You don’t know me, you don’t know me,” Rodriguez sings. “I’m only a struggle if I get in your way,” she continues, “You made the road, made the road one way.”
The song embodies Rodriguez as an artist and what she’s capable of. It tackles the issue of genders and its general meaningless.
“One word can have so much social implication, standard, limitation, qualification that it doesn’t give a person their own opportunity to really choose their identity,” she explains in a statement. “I wrote ‘Woman Is A Word’ at a time when I felt like the word ‘woman’ put me in a box of things I was capable to do, things that defined me that didn’t necessarily define me.”
Just six months after the release of her debut album, Me, comes the release of these new singles. There’s no word yet if another album is on the horizon.
