Underworld comprised of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, has just released a teaser for their new album Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future. The teaser is a compilation of snippets of songs that will appear on the album which will be released March 18th of this year via Astrel Werks.
In late January of this year, the British electronic duo released a new song and music video called “I Exhale” which was their first piece of new music released in six years since their latest album Barking in 2010. “I Exhale” will be the opening track on the album.
The group has been off and on as far as writing music and even merely existing as a band since they first began in the 1980’s. Yet they have continued to regroup in some form or another- sometimes with new band members, to make new music. In 2010 Underworld announced that yet again that they would pause from making new music as a band and focus on independent projects. As the silence approached 6 years, fans began to wonder if this was not just only a break and maybe something more. Finally the long-awaited announcement that they would be releasing a whole album together appeared.
Underworld is also looking forward to performing live again–which until this year they hadn’t done since 2013. They have plans to perform at Irelands Forbidden Fruit Festival this year as well as Coachella– which is significant because they played at the very first festival when it began in 1999. They will be playing Coachella sideshow in Pomona as well.
Though founded in the 8o’s, Underworld is said to be “one of the most crucial acts of the 90’s” with a heavily welcomed and unique sound of it’s time. This was the era that the band found their mark of heavily treated barely whispering vocals and bluesy yet stark instrumentals that carried them into the decades to come.
